the best cake i have ever made

Of course I also left my camera at a friend's the weekend before, so a cell phone picture will have to suffice. Double string basketweave sides. Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. Dark chocolate cornucopia filled with luster-dusted dark chocolate raspberry creams (made by the hands of yours truly).

(mind the box... i couldn't find my cupcake carrier)

note the hay (but excuse the lighting... it was a terribly rainy/grey day)

final(ly)

The final for my intermediate cake class was a wedding cake. Despite a few snags (including, but not limited to: sickness, cake cracks, flowers breaking a half hour before class, a lop-sided bottom layer, running out of frosting, and completely re-doing my nosegay at the last minute), I think it came out quite well.

my cake!
(I didn't have time to make a mini-nosegay for the bottom tier, sadly)

(The nosegay--I made the mums & apple blossoms myself)

damien rice cake

I have a friend who loves Damien Rice, so I thought I'd make her an extra-personalized cake to celebrate.

it would have been much punnier (though impossible to cut) as an actual rice cake, but i thought funfetti was far more fitting (and more delicious)

i decorated this little lady on my lunch break...

well, minus making the flowers, anyway...

(the sides were basketweave, but not my best work...)

numero dos

My second cake... the frosting didn't come out as smooth and the writing didn't either (probably because I had trouble achieving the shade of brown I wanted) and maybe also because I decorated it in twenty minutes after just waking up... (i.e. I'm not a morning person)

patty cake patty cake...

How I made my first cake: a story in pictures.

(first layer - double dark chocolate fudge)

(second layer & buttercream center... taken at an angle so it looks slanted)

(the ever-important crumb layer)

(smoothing things over)

(with cornelli lace it's bordering on complete)

voila!
